Probably trained in Perugia, Pinturicchio soon entered the circle of Perugino, who is thought to hav
e been his teacher and with whom he most likely worked on the eight small panels depicting \i Scenes from the Life of Saint Bernardine\i0 (1473, Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria, Perugia). The \i Christ Crucified between Two Saints\i0 in the Galleria Bor
ghese in Rome dates from the same period. In 1481 he assisted Perugino in decorating the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican Palaces in Rome. He returned to Rome between 1485 and 1490 to paint the \i Scenes from the Life of Saint Bernardine\i0 in the Bufalini
Chapel of the church of Santa Maria in Aracoeli. During this period he traveled frequently between Rome and Perugia. In 1489 he traveled to Orvieto to create a number of frescoes in the apse of the cathedral. From 1492 to 1495 he worked in Rome on the d
ecoration of the Borgia Apartment in the Vatican. In 1495 he painted the altarpiece for the Perugian church of Santa Maria dei Fossi (Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria, Perugia), and in 1497 the frescoes of the Eroli Chapel in Spoleto Cathedral. In 1501 he
was appointed Prior in Perugia, and in the same year finished the frescoes in the church of Santa Maria Maggiore at Spello. Pinturicchio was commissioned to decorate the Piccolomini Library in Siena Cathedral in 1502, but did not start working on it unti
l 1505. The following year he settled permanently in Siena and completed the frescoes of the library around 1509. His last work was the \i Road to Calvary\i0 in the Borromeo Collection (1513, Isola Bella).
